letting your kids talk back to strangers

This one was a bit confusing for me -- it was sort of a hybrid between allowing your children to communicate with strangers, and whether you allow your children to talk back to adults.  A lot of what I said ended up on the cutting room floor, so let me clarify:

a)  Alex is absolutely empowered to tell an adult that she finds threatening that she's uncomfortable.  She's also empowered to walk or run away.  However:

b)  under no circumstances is she allowed to be rude to a non-threatening adult.
